Drama show to mark the 200th birth anniversary of Nikolai Gogol - 31st March

On the occasion of the Bi-centenary birth anniversary of the Great Russian writer Nikolai Gogol (1809-1852), Russian Centre of Science and Culture and Shaili Theatre jointly organized a comedy drama show “The Inspector General” written by Nikolai Gogol. The drama was translated in Nepali by writer Khagendra Sangraula.
A satirical play by the Russian playwright Nikolai Gogol , ‘The Inspector-General’ marked a new era in the development of dramatic art in Russia. The story revolves around the corrupt officials of a small Russian town, headed by Mayor. The mayor react with terror to the news that an inspector will soon be arriving in their town to investigate them. The flurrying of activity to cover up their considerable misdeeds is interrupted by the report that a suspicious person has arrived two weeks previously from Saint Petersburg and is staying inside the town. That person however is not an inspector but a foppish civil servant with wild imagination and he bluffs all the people by taking bribes from them.
At the end every one got shocked knowing that original Inspector General is coming to investigate them and the previous was fake Inspector General. A two hour drama was well played by the characters. All the artists in the drama seem professional in their work though they said they had come up with short rehearsal and home work.
Speaking at the programme writer Khagendra Sangraula said the drama reflects the vivid pictures of anarchism and monopoly at the time of feudalism. “I would not have translated this drama in Nepali if I was not sentenced to jail during the then panchayat regime therefore it provoked the favor of Tsar regime in Russia,” he added.
Director of Russian Centre of Science and Culture DR V.V Novikov said Gogol stories so far reflects the contemporary issues of Russia in satirical way. He also applauded the work of artists in making the drama successful and worthy in short span of time.
